L'accompagnement des femmes allaitantes en consultation de médecine générale par les internes formés à l'ile de La Réunion

Abstract : Introduction: Exclusive breastfeeding for six months is the diet best suited to the needs of the newborn baby. General practitioners have a supportive role which positively influences the initiation and prolongation of breastfeeding. The aim of this study is to describe the knowledge of general medical interns trained in Reunion Island concerning breastfeeding. Method: The study is an quantitative, declarative and descriptive cross-sectional study, carried out from 01 May 2019 to 31 October 2019. Numerical questionnaires were sent to general medicine residents enrolled at the University of Reunion island in 2018-2019. Results: Two hundred and thirty-eight interns were registered at the university and 132 questionnaires were completed. Breastfeeding was important for 86% of the interns and 67% considered themselves pro- breastfeeding. However, the interns did not feel comfortable with breastfeeding (76.5%) apart from those who had had children. Only 16% of the interns knew the real rate of primary milk deficiency, which is the first cause of cessation of breastfeeding. Half of the interns felt able to manage breast pain and sores on their own in breastfeeding women. 95.5% of the interns are interested in further training on breastfeeding and possible recourse to breastfeeding issues in Reunion Island. Conclusion: The knowledge of the general medical interns in the study was limited concerning the physiology of lactation, the management of the mother-child couple and the remedies available. The majority of the interns requested further training in breastfeeding.
