La ville inquiète : questionnements autour de la représentation des espaces urbains états-uniens dans les films de John Carpenter

Abstract : What could be possibly more realistic than setting a movie in a big city or in an American suburb? John Carpenter’s realism being firmly-rooted in his movies, the shadow of the supernatural is all the more dreadful since it sneaks in our day-to-day, humdrum lives. Hence the starting point of this study consists in highlighting John Carpenter’s signature feeling of dread that dovetails in part of his filmography. Carpenter’s cinema features cinematographic spaces that are imbued with narrative, aesthetic as well as supernatural-related elements. Thus, the familiar realism of a given cinematographic space and its fragile balance end up being broken by some strange, inexplicable, irrational manifestation. Carpenter’s spatiality arises from these two dichotomous yet overlapping realities. Consequently, the American director’s production will be considered as a means of creating spatial dread : filling the non-places with unknown manifestations, the cinematographic space is turned into a source of distress itself. To begin with, this corpus is made up of feature films that share the same cinematographic use of space. Based on the study of their common manifestations, three urban spaces as well as their own characteristics emerge, epitomizing the American society itself along with its social and spatial issues. Firstly, the suburbs are to be analysed thanks to Halloween (1978) and Christine (1983). Then The Fog (1980) and Village of the Damned (1995) exemplify the second urban space under study, the American little town. Last, downtown areas being regarded as the heart of urbanity, their study will base on Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) and They Live (1988).
