Gestion de la privation de sommeil en ultra-trail : Étude transversale des habitudes, stratégies et répercussions chez les coureurs du Grand Raid de La Réunion 2018

Abstract : Sleep management during an ultra-trail is a key to success and an important prevention factor in the face of sleep deprivation disorders. The objective of this study was to describe sleep habits and strategies used before, during and after an ultra-trail. An identification of strategies arising from a decrease in the occurrence of accumulated sleep debt disorders was a secondary objective. This was a declarative cross-sectional descriptive epidemiological study by self-administered questionnaire targeting participants of the Diagonale des fous and Le trail de Bourbon of the Grand Raid de La Reunion 2018. The analysis covered 1153 finishers including 882 on the Diagonale des fous and 272 finishers of the Trail de Bourbon. The extension of the daily sleep time before the event was the majority with 54.3% (n=627) of the competitors on both races. Short naps of less than 30 minutes during the test were the most common (37.5% for naps of 0 to 15 minutes and 40.7% for naps of 15 to 30 minutes). The recovery time of an awakening state without drowsiness was mainly one to three days after the arrival regarding 83.8% (n=967) of the subjects on both tests. The majority of the competitors adapted their sleep rhythm during their race. Sleep, in terms of rhythm, quality and duration is a parameter to be taken into account in the preparation of an ultra-trail in order to apprehend alertness disorders and reduce accident. The extension of sleep time before departure, the introduction of naps during the race, and the minimum rest period of three days after arrival are the line of thought for accident prevention.
