Attention aux mathématiques : TDA et trouble de la cognition mathématique, quels liens ?

Abstract : The Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) either with or without hyperactivity is increasingly detected or diagnosed. While its connection with some learning disabilities such as language disorders, is well known for years, its connection with mathematical cognition disorders has never been a matter of great concern for the researchers. This unknown part aroused our curiosity and we aimed to study how ADD could impact the mathematical cognition disorders.
Our primary goal was to assess the impact of ADD on mathematical cognition performances among two patients presenting with ADD. These two patients were under treatment by the time of study. We then compared the number sense between children with ADD and a child suffering from primary dyscalculia in order to outline a mathematical profile corresponding to patients with ADD. For this purpose, we introduced two modules of tests to these three school children, aged from 8 years and 10 months to 10 years and 8 months. Please note that this test battery was Examath computerized (Lafay, Helloin).
What did our results reveal about the ADD’s children we tested? We noticed that these children had mathematical cognition disorders on arithmetic tests but also, disorders in basic digital skills. The sense of number was, on its side, not impacted. Those results allow us to highlight that the strategy of how to test is key: test selection, awareness of the underlying cognitive processes such as the executive functions, the various children’s attention, the degree of impulsiveness, but more importantly the time element. Indeed, the timing has a significant impact on the performances and corroborates the ADD’s disorders regarding mathematical cognition. Through the identification of ADD features, the speech therapy will enable to increase the mathematical cognition’s skills, thus giving a better access to learning.
