Étude qualitative : retour d’expérience sur l’utilisation du méthoxyflurane inhalé par les pisteurs-secouristes d’Avoriaz et Flaine sur la période 2017 à 2019

Abstract : Introduction: In order to respond to patients’ pain and to facilitate the healthcare process, Avoriaz and Flaine’s doctors have implemented a protocol allowing the delivery of inhaled methoxyflurane (IMTXF) by ski patrollers to patients who have an isolated limb trauma with pain greater than 6/10. The study's main objective was to gather doctors and ski patrollers points of view regarding the advantages and limits of PENTHROX® Protocol. The second objective was to offer it improvements for the upcoming seasons. Materials and methods : This qualitative study is based on the data collected from the feedbacks of 8 doctors trained in emergency response and 26 patrollers during the second season of deployment of the PENTHROX® Protocol. Results: Patrollers noted a quick pain relief on the injured after IMTXF‘s inhalation. It would help them to immobilize and transport them without the need of any medical intervention. The methoxyflurane’s contribution would save time and improve the profession of ski patroller. The patrollers’ apprehension and a lack of automation hampered the protocol’s first stages. Though, to give one IMTXF per patroller and to provide regular trainings increased its use on the second year. Discussion: Doctors and ski patrollers are satisfied with this protocol. The main element limiting its use would be the non-compulsory nature of annual trainings. A training and organization guide for the protocol is offered following these feedbacks. The use of IMTXF could be extended to moderate pain as well as to the pediatric population.
