The effects of nature against the urban heat island: the example of Edinburgh, Scotland

Since the late 1980’s, society has become aware of the importance of nature in daily life. The cities now promote nature and develop in agreement with it. This phenomenon can be noticed within the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. The city center is divided into two by the Princes Street Gardens, with the modern part, New Town, on the North and the historic part, Old Town, on the South. The city seems to have a tight link with corners of nature, a link anchored in its history. If we consider that a modern city is one that opens up in agreement with nature, we can consider that Edinburgh is a modern city since a long time ago. This master thesis is entitled “The effects of nature facing the urban heat island: the example of Edinburgh, Scotland”. Our field studies are focused on the most central districts of the city. We study the temperature control of the city thanks to nature from the thermal variations. In order to do that, we use an infrared camera. Overall, four different studies are carried out. First, we would like to identify the logic of distribution of the green spaces of the city. Then, we would like to determine the influence of meteorological conditions over the temperature of the city. Thus, we can show that solar radiations are the biggest temperature influencer in urban areas. Then, we study the effects of the presence of plants on a wall. Finally, a profile of the ideal park is given, from an environmental perspective. This master thesis allows us to determine that the nature in Edinburgh plays a certain role in the limitation of the urban heat island phenomenon.
