Évaluation des connaissances de la population générale de la Corse sur les accidents vasculaires cérébraux et de l'impact des campagnes de prévention

Abstract : Stokes (cerebrovascular accidents–CVA) represent a medical or even surgical emergency and major public health issue. However, this pathology is accessible to prevention. It is therefore essential that the general population be well informed on this subject, for optimal care. The aim of this work is to assess the knowledge of the general Corsican population on CVA, and the impact of prevention campaigns.
91% of participants had heard of CVA, and 69% were able to give its exact meaning. The warning signs conveyed by prevention campaigns were the most cited: facial paralysis (31,5%), sensorimotor deficits (50,3%) and speech disorders (43.6%). The risk factors are still little known: 27.6% cited none, and only 38% could name at least three. In the event of a suspected CVA, only 40% would systematically call the SAMU (France’s Emergency Medical Service). Only 31% had heard of TIA, and 17.4% would call the SAMU if they were victims or witnesses of one. Finally, 56.4% of participants have already seen and/or heard prevention campaigns, and 89% felt that these were insufficient.
The Corsican population seems familiar with the term CVA, its meaning, and the serious and urgent nature of this pathology. The results on warning signs and the calling the emergency services are still insufficient. As for the risk factors and TIAs, they remain largely unknown. It therefore seems necessary to multiply and strengthen awareness campaigns using various means of communication to reach the population as widely as possible (targeted campaigns, schools, internet, media, etc.).
