La Prophylaxie pré-exposition : étude qualitative de la représentation des médecins généralistes des Alpes-Maritimes à propos de la PrEP

Abstract : Introduction: HIV is a major public health issue. A new tool is available to fight this epidemic: pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP. General practitioners have a key role to play in health promotion. There are few studies analyzing PrEP in general medicine. Approximately 9% of patients on PrEP reside in the PACA region. This prevention is therefore an important tool for general practitioners in the Alpes-Maritimes. The aim is to assess how general practitioners in the Alpes-Maritimes perceive and approach PrEP.
Method: We made a qualitative study analyzing the way GP perceive PrEP in the Alpes-Maritimes. We interviewed individually a group of GP with a semi-structured interview guide. The analysis of these interviews was based on the model of the grounded theory method.
Results: We reached theoretical data saturation with eleven interviews. Six main areas emerged: the place of the general practitioner in PrEP, morals and ethics vis-à-vis PrEP, public health, PrEP consultations, general knowledge of PrEP and barriers.
Discussion: Wider dissemination of PrEP requires training of general practitioners in order to overcome certain reservations. Talking about sexuality and sexualy risky behavior is essential to recommand PrEP in general medical practice, but this taboo subject is a barrier for some practitioners.
