Étude exploratoire des stratégies de recherches d’informations médicales sur internet par les patients

Abstract : Context: in 2020, internet is still growing and search about medical informations are knowing a significant progress. One of the major result of that progress is the new kind of doctor/patient relationship. Eager to better understand his health, patients are facing an unlimited source of informations on internet, but they’re not necessarily verified by medical expert and their quality is quite variable. Goals: within this thesis, first we study all the patient strategies used on internet in order to find medical informations. Then, we also focus on the patient feeling and criticism of the information easily available on internet during medical searchs. Method: we performed a qualitative analysis using anchored theory method through semistructured interviews on a sample of 18 patients contacted in semi-rural medical structures. The analysis of thematic content have been done with NVivo 12® software and it was completed with two researchers triangulation. Results: patients does not have strategy for answering medical questions when doing research on the internet. Most of the time it uses the Google® search engine and selects the first link from the list of results. General public health sites are widely consulted, instead of forums, rarely consulted and when they are, it’s by patients with chronic diseases. Generaly, only a few amount of website are consulted. The main way used to ensure the reliability of the information is to compare informations found on different sites. He doesn't know any medical certifications. Conclusion: the internet user is learning more and more about his health, but that does not mean he is doing it better than he did seventeen years ago in the Eysenbach and Köhler study in 2002. The internet patient uses simple search strategies without a systematic fiability check of informations found or website consulted.
