Cigarette électronique et consommation tabagique de trente usagers précaires du CAARUD de Bordeaux sur six mois de 2017 à 2018

Abstract : Tobacco, precariousness and polyaddiction are closely linked. Precarious and/or multi-consumer subjects are likely to develop a greater tobacco dependence, leading to an increased morbidity and mortality. The electronic cigarette, currently controversial, can represent a possible tool for smoking cessation or tobacco reduction but remains poorly evaluated in vulnerable populations. Objective: to assess over six months, from July 2017 to January 2018, the impact of electronic cigarettes on 30 precarious users’ smoking consumption of Bordeaux CAARUD. Materials and methods: a quantitative descriptive study of the tobacco consumption over 6 months, from July 2017 to January 2018, of 30 voluntary adult smokers from CAARUD, after distribution of electronic cigarettes and related equipment by the structure. The 30 voluntary users selected answered to the precariousness criteria of the EPICES score and dependence on the CDS-5 scale. Results: out of 30 questionnaires, 21 could be exploited, giving a 6-month response rate of 70%. At the data collection end, 60% of users had reduced their tobacco consumption, 3.3% had quit smoking and 6.7% had increased their consumption. The e-cigarette was mostly perceived positively as an aid in tobacco reduction. Conclusion: it seems that the electronic cigarette can have an impact on the tobacco consumption of precarious users but other powerful studies are necessary in order to ensure its effectiveness within this population and its long-term safety.
