Évaluation qualitative de la télésurveillance des exacerbations d’asthme par un spiromètre portatif auprès d’enfants asthmatiques instables

Abstract : The monitoring of unstable asthmatic children, which encompasses therapeutic compliance, monitoring of exacerbations, and personal perception of the condition, remains problematic for medical professionals. A close treatment monitoring cannot be undertaken by successive functional respiratory tests in a hospital; however remote medical monitoring via a portable spirometer (Spirobank Smart®) could be a viable alternative. The main objective of the assessment was to evaluate the asthmatic children’s personal perception of their exacerbations via remote medical monitoring. Material and methodology: a qualitative investigation based on semi-structured interviews of unstable asthmatic children and their parents. 15 children were questioned from December 2018 to September 2019. Results: three major themes stood out from the investigation: the knowledge and perception of the exacerbations by the children and their parents: the discrepancies between the children and their parents regarding the perception of the chronic illness; the children's and parents’ experience with the device. The entire sample of interviewees was content with the device and the monitoring, however they underlined that the frequent use of the device was quite constraining. Conclusion: the monitoring of asthma exacerbations via a remote medical monitoring device, was approved by the children and their parents. Progress is currently being made in order to optimise the spirometer and thereby improve upon the monitoring of asthma by medical professionals.
