Analyse des facteurs du sous-diagnostic du syndrome des jambes sans repos par les médecins généralistes : étude qualitative réalisée auprès de médecins généralistes de Nouvelle Aquitaine

Abstract : Introduction: in France, 8.5% of the general population is concerned by Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). It can be severe enough to need a treatment. Prevalence studies showed that this syndrome could be underdiagnosed by general practitioners. The lack of knowledge is the most claimed argument. The aim of our study was to research and analyze the various factors that could explain this under diagnosis. Methods: a qualitative study using semi-direct interviews with general practitioners working in Nouvelle-Aquitaine was carried out. It was conducted in parallel with a literature review. A joint analysis of these interviews and the literature review revealed various reasons for this under-diagnosis. Results: 10 interviews provided data saturation. No literature article on the reasons for the under-diagnosis of RLS in primary care was found, the scope of the research had to be broadened. Analysis of the data revealed that the under diagnosis is multi-factorial. Under diagnosis would depend on characteristics specific to the symptomatology, characteristics inherent in the training of doctors and their interest in this pathology, and finally on the attitude of patients. Conclusion: RLS suffers from a lack of knowledge on the part of both patients and physicians. It can be easily confused with other more frequent and better known pathologies. Finally, it suffers a lack of recognition, its very existence is called into question, and it may not be considered as a serious pathology.
