Différenciation des paysages du Pays basque rural à travers l'étude des pratiques agricoles passées et actuelles

Abstract : Within the framework of the updating of the Atlas of the Landscapes of the Atlantic Pyrenees, this work is dedicated to the interior and rural Basque Country. Region where agriculture plays a determining role in the perception and landscape experience of the inhabitants. The foundations of this society on the etxe and the moorland commons are at the origin of the landscapes we perceive today. Each place, by its singular history, will tend towards an agricultural system adapted to the physical conditions of the environment and responding to a particular challenge. The 1970s will mark a major upheaval in the agricultural practices of the rural Basque Country and the landscape dissonances on the territory will be revealed. The meeting with farmers from four different physical environments brought to light that the mountain is defined by its use. Thus a strong distinction is made between the mountains where a transhumance of stay, bortua, is practiced. The crossing of these elements has led to a proposal of a landscape differentiation for the rural Basque Country in four major landscapes and seven landscape variations.
