Le sémantisme du verbe anglais get dans les expressions figées

Abstract : Idiomatic expressions have been the subject of a wide range of phraseological studies across many languages. In this corpus study, we analyse the semantic properties of the polysemic English verb get in idiomatic expressions. Through a syntactic analysis of the internal structure of 26 expressions, along with a series of observations on a large corpus of spoken and written American English, we attempt to demonstrate the hypothesis that the meanings of get present in phraseological units with varying degrees of semantic opacity are analogous to its meanings in free lexical associations sharing similar structures. In addition, we attempt to show that the meanings carried by the verb get in idiomatic expressions contribute in a systematic way to the creation of the larger figurative meanings expressed by these phraseological units. We hope that this study will shed some light on the semantic behavior of polysemic verbs in the context of phraseological units.
