La délégitimation de la violence contestataire : une étude des émeutes de 2005, de la Manif pour tous et de la Loi Travail

Abstract : Political violence is a category that includes a significant number of different forms of violence. One of them is called protest violence, aimed at power or those who hold it. Our intention here is to demonstrate that such violence has been delegitimized, on the basis of an analysis of social discourse regarding events that took place in France, such as the 2005 riots, La Manif pour Tous (The Protest for everyone) and French employment law. Our aim is thus to study temporal persistence, semantic and lexical relations between different lexemes, as well as the process of delegitimization of different groups of protesters (labelled “suburban youth”, “right-wing families” or “left-wing trade-union youth.”) This study shows that the perception of what is – or is not – violent varies according to the context, but especially according to who produces the discourse. We have observed that in spite of the systematic assertion of a lack of meaning and political message diagnosed by the media, the importance of such events in the collective memory of the linguistic community seems to prove the opposite. Finally, the delegitimization of protest violence, and thus of its instigators, by criminalizing them or comparing them to terrorists, illustrates a confiscation of legitimate violence by the authorities, who must delegitimize all other kinds of violence in order to assert their power.
