La promotion de l’activité physique en médecine générale. Étude qualitative sur les représentations et les pratiques de médecins généralistes de l’île de La Réunion

Abstract : Introduction: Aware of the increase of sedentary lifestyle and population health impact, the government acts for physical activity promotion. As the coordinator of care pathway, the general practitioner’s engagement is determinant. The aim of this study is to identify factors that influence the physical activity promotion by general practitioners in Reunion Island. Method: This is a qualitative study. The data were collecting by 12 semi-structured individual interviews. The data analysis was based on the principle of the grounded theory method. Results: 12 general practitioners were interviewed between January and May 2020. The general practitioners see themselves as preferred interlocutor. The Evidence based medicine is source of knowledge about physical activities benefit but their experience influences their clinical practice too. There is a lot of obstacles like lack of formation, low profitability, unmotivated patient, the high cost or the lack of sporting equipment. Some general practitioners can use « Sport on Prescription » team to increase exercise promotion and remove some barriers. General practitioners who exercise are more likely to feel confident about promoting physical activity. Their interest in sports help them to counselling their patient about physical activity. Conclusion: This study highlights the influence of personal and professional experience in general practitioner’s representation and practice about physical activity. General practitioners experience (if they exercise, they study about AP) will lead them to promote AP.
