La connaissance des pères sur la contraception : étude quantitative réalisée en suites de couches au CH de Chambéry

Abstract : Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find out the level of knowledge of men about contraception, their source of information and whether they would consider male contraception apart from condoms. Method: A prospective cross-sectional monocentric survey was conducted with fathers following childbirth, at the maternity hospital in Chambéry. Data collection was carried out using self-administered questionnaires for the period from July 1 to August 31. Results: Eighty-five fathers agreed to participate in the study, which makes a 97% acceptance rate. The overall knowledge of the men was just sufficient. The best known contraceptives were the pill, IUDs and condoms. Their main source of information is their entourage. Fifty-six percent of the men interviewed would consider taking contraception instead of their partner. Information on male contraception is scarce. Conclusion: Men doesn’t feel informed enough. To remedy this, information programs such as sex education and health care during their schooling could encourage men to invest in contraception later. It would also be interesting to make health professionals aware of this lack in order to respond to this demand from the male gender.
