Les oméga-3 : une aide dans la prise en charge du cancer colorectal

Abstract : The polyunsaturated fatty acid n-3 of marine’s origin, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid are essential fatty acid with potential beneficial effects on health, especially in cardiovascular diseases. After defining all fatty acids and their metabolism, the work is based on the importance of the balance between ω3 and ω6, and his consequence on membrane fluidity. This balance is possible only by a varied and balanced diet. In a second part, the study focuses in colorectal cancer by detailing both its epidemiology and physiopathology. In fact, colorectal cancer is the second cancer in France. Affecting in majority men and women over 50 years old, up to 41% could be avoided if a better screening was performed. The work explain with many studies that chronic inflammation is the basis for the formation of cancerous tumors. That’s why chemoprevention is very important and the inclusion of ω3 proves to have a positive impact when administered in addition to chemical treatment. Then the thesis explains by which means the interaction between cells takes place and how its disruption can have adverse health consequences. Many risk factors of colorectal cancer exist, too much saturated fat and bad fat are included. Actually, this fact impact badly the balance ω3/ω6, and create inflammations on colon, which is the starting point for tumour formation. therefore the ω3 intake is essential by anti-inflammatory effect and by the action on apoptosis. In another part, the treatments of colorectal cancer are explained with the molecules uses and their side effects. Some mediators such as survivin, p53 protein, and micro ARN16-1 are key targets in the treatment of colorectal cancer. Researchers have studied how DHA could modulate those targets and play a positive role in the treatment of colorectal cancer if this one is given with the treatment. Finally, ω3 have a positive effect on colorectal cancer recurrence because as administered in addition to conventional treatment, we can see a decrease of colonosphere formation and no tumor growth was observed once the treatment stopped. Omega-3 can also decrease cachexia commonly observed during treatments of colorectal cancer and represent a bad factor for the recovery.
