Comportement alimentaire en population générale durant le confinement dans le contexte de la pandémie Covid-19 en France : étude comparative avant et pendant le confinement

Abstract : Introduction: The generalised lockdown of the entire French population is an unprecedented event. Restrictions of freedom have immediate but also medium and long-term negative psychological consequences. Yet, there is a link between a low level of psychological wellbeing and changes in eating behaviour. Our main objective is to compare the eating behaviour of the general population between before and during lockdown.
Method: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study, joint between the CHU of Nice and the EDHEC Business School of Nice. We distributed an online survey between April 21 and May 13, 2020. We led an univariate statistical analysis using Student T-tests or ANOVA and Pearson correlations. A multivariate analysis was also conducted.
Results: In univariate analysis, the results show a significant increase in craving for healthy and unhealthy products. There is a correlation between consumption of healthy products and anxiety symptoms and between consumption of unhealthy products and symptoms of depression. Teleworking is correlated with higher consumption of healthy products. Subjects consuming unhealthy products spent less time for lunch during confinement than before. In multivariate analysis, it appears that signs of depression, presential work and rapid mealtime intake are predictive factors for the consumption of unhealthy products.
Conclusion: These results show a real short-term impact of confinement on the eating behaviour of the French population. They provide a warning about the development of eating disorders and obesity in the future.
