Consultations aux urgences pédiatriques de Dax pour une fièvre de moins de 48h chez l’enfant de 3 mois à 18 ans : raisons et inquiétudes parentales

Abstract : Introduction: fever in children is a reason for frequent consultation in general medicine but it is also one of the main reasons for consultation in pediatric emergencies. The main objective of our study was to assess the parental concerns related to fever during consultations at the Dax paediatric emergency room for a fever of less than 48 hours in a child over 3 months of age. Material and method: we carried out a prospective mono-centric descriptive epidemiological study from November to February 2020 at the Dax paediatric emergencies. Questionnaires were distributed to consulting parents for a fever of less than 48 hours in a child over 3 months of age. Results: 61 questionnaires were analysed. The reasons why parents were most concerned were the cause of the fever (54%), the fever itself (31%) with a concern that seemed to increase if the temperature value was high, a fragile area of the child (age or medical background) and poor hydration. The most mentionned reasons for consultation with 87% and 85% of respondents were, respectively, to know the reasons for the fever and a high measured temperature value at home. Additional tests were performed in 6 children, including 4 Streptatest® among the spontaneous child consultants. From the 4 children sent by liberal doctors, 3 benefited from additional examinations. Conclusion: the parents were more concerned about the cause of the fever than about the fever itself. Fever remains an important cause for concern, especially if the temperature value is high but the “fever phobia” is to be qualified in our study. It would be interesting to clarify to parents the method of recourse to the recommended care, with in the first place a consultation in the city because the majority of these fevers are benign viral infections.
