Peut-on combattre les stéréotypes de genre par l'aménagement de l'espace public ?

Abstract : Men and women are today still affiliated to stereotyped roles which are orienting women to work of “care” and men to productive work. These inequalities are reflected onto public spaces by different mobility, different access to entertainment activities… Progresses have been made in Europe and around the world, which permitted changes, and the opening of project centered on gender mainstreaming. These inequalities could be verified by the study of two parks in the city of Lyon. The study showed that men are more likely to being present in parks than women. It showed that men would practice more physical activities, while women would practice more relaxation activities. This situation could be explained by the number of public equipment dedicated to masculine activities, and the hold of those spaces by men. The focus on children playgrounds in the parks also showed that women would be more with children on playground specifically dedicated to children, while men would be more present with children on “normal” playgrounds. Answers to these patriarchal schemes were developed in this document, by explaining the chosen concepts in response to the competition “An exemplary non gendered space” (by Le cercle de Zaha) on the Jean Jaurès place (in Lyon). Those propositions led to creating a new playground for everyone, without creating barriers between spaces. Those spaces could then attract the inhabitant of the neighborhood to investing the place and create a new social site where everybody could feel safe, comfortable, and could act freely.
