La formation des internes caennais en DES de médecine générale : quelle influence sur leur choix d’activité professionnelle une fois diplômés ?

Abstract : Today 56% of general practitioners work in private practice in France 5 years after their first registration with the college of physicians. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate in a retrospective way the influence of the residency training in the choice of general practitioners’ activity on a cohort of doctors who graduated between 2011 and 2017 at Caen university. An online survey was sent to the individuals eligible for the study. 102 answers were analysed. The current hospital activity of the respondents is much more important in comparison with their projects before the ECN. The internships, in particular those completed in the field of the respondents’ current activity, had had the strongest impact on their choice of activity. This influence seemed closely linked to their experience of those various internships. The impact of their theoretical training was less significant. The choice of “SASPAS”, a professionalising internship, “DU”, “DIU”, and “DESC” were a result of the previous project of residents and mostly tended to strengthen their choices. Their experience of the “SASPAS” stage had an influence on the delay of settlement. There was no connection between ambulatory internships and the region of current exercise. Therefore, the professional exercise project of the future general practitioner is built in steps along their residency. Taking these steps into account could improve the adaptation of the residency to territorial medical needs.
