Mémorisation de la douleur et Odontologie

Abstract : The complexity of the pain and memory link is manifested through some phenomena. This can be illustrated by physiological mechanisms preventing our pain from being updated, amnesic ictus, flashbulb memory, phantom limb pain ... On the behavioral level, coping is the set of processes that an individual puts between him and a trying event, in order to control or reduce the impact. Medical situations experienced from childhood influence later coping. Biologically, any painful dental stimulus causes lasting neurochemical and synaptic changes in the central nervous system. Within the limbic system, neuroimaging has shown changes following pain. Taking into account the role of the amygdala in memorizing information with emotional connotations, the integration of this stimulus by the limbic system is likely to lead to the phenomena of learning and memory. The biological mechanisms that sustainably store pain are probably located all along the chain of transmission. The conclusion of this work was to reveal a lasting molecular, cellular and behavioral modification following dental pathology. This structural plasticity of the brain, resulting in a memorization on a biological scale of our lesional pathological liabilities impacts the frequency and degree of involvement of future lesions. Memory of pain provides the keys to understanding few emotional, even psychosomatic, behaviors that are still beyond medical understanding.
