Les utilisatrices de l’homéopathie pendant la grossesse, le travail et le post-partum

Abstract : Introduction: Homeopathy is an alternative therapy that may be prescribed by midwives during pregnancy. Largely used by French people, the Caisse Nationale d’Assurance Maladie has decided to discontinue to subsidize it. The primary objective of our study is to establish what would be the typical profile of women resorting to homeopathy during pregnancy, labor and postpartum. The secondary objective is to look into the criteria leading to select homeopathy for these three periods. Data Collection and Methodology: We conducted a prospective cross-sectional bicentric study at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire and at the Polyclinique du Parc de Caen, using a questionnaire handed over on the second day of postpartum to women being hospitalized between September 30 and November 26, 2019. Findings: We were unable to determine whether there was a typical profile of women resorting to homeopathy during pregnancy, labor and postpartum. However, we were able to demonstrate that women using other alternative therapies or acupuncture were 3,21 times more likely to use homeopathic therapy. Our findings showed that 76,4% of the women resorted to homeopathy during pregnancy since they found it compatible with pregnancy and 68,1% homeopathy users’ since there was no risks for the fetus. Homeopathy therapy was mainly used during the first trimester of pregnancy to alleviate nausea, and postpartum in order to inhibit or stimulate lactation. Conclusion: Homeopathy users’ have already used other alternative therapy methods as well as acupuncture. Homeopathy therapy during pregnancy are viewed by their users as generally adapted to pregnancy and used to alleviate related discomfort.
