Les motivations professionnelles et personnelles des sages-femmes exerçant en maisons de naissance

Abstract : The aim of this work was to determine and understand the professional and personal motivations of midwives who are working in birth centers. Eight interviews were carried out with midwives working in six experimentation French birth centers. This study has made it possible to bring out that the global support is part of one of the existing motivations, however it’s not the main one. Indeed, midwives who practice didn’t wait for the development of birth centers in France to follow couples in global support. Midwives appreciate the autonomy and the enrichment of birth centers as well as teamwork, safety and the use of all of their midwifery skills and responsibilities. However, experimenting with birth centers requires additional administrative management, which is exhausting for these midwives, and the financial non-recognition of their work is a major obstacle to this type of exercise.
