De la fleur des langues à l’autoportrait : questionner la conscience du plurilinguisme dans une classe de CE1

Abstract : This thesis is concerned with the dual issue of equal opportunities for citizens and recognition of cultural rights in educational institutions, within the context of the reconsideration of civic values in France. Drawing on language awareness as defined by Michel Candelier, the aim of the study is to develop multicultural and multilingual awareness with pupils in CE1 (primary 3, 7-8 year olds) and to observe links between this and their self-awareness and thus grasp the porosity between educational and family environments. I therefore recommend obtaining their language biography by means of the ‘language flower’ system, which I re-examine at a later stage by creating a picture identity card. The majority of pupils express their multiple backgrounds, associating a sense of value with their plural identity. Moreover, by means of a calm class atmosphere and the accurate results of the activities during the sessions, it would appear that the aims are achieved. Nevertheless, awareness of linguistic practices is a skill which is built over a long period of time, requiring a reflective approach, not yet learned in stage 2.
