L'utilisation en automédication du cumin velu par les patients et médecins marocains, dans le traitement des coliques du nourrisson : étude des pratiques existantes

Abstract : Introduction. Infantile colic is a disorder without any standard existing treatment ; it is also a major anxiety source for the parents. Herbal medicine using the hairy cumin is frequently used to treat the symptoms of infantile colic in Morocco. The aim of this study is to analyse the use of hairy cumin, in self medication, by moroccan doctors and patients, in the symptomatic treatment of infantile colic. Method. A qualitative, trans-sectional study using self-evaluational survey has been performed on voluntary moroccan doctors (n=110); it evaluates the use of hairy cumin by their patients and themselves. Results. Patients use hairy cumin in self medication and are satisfied with it’s efficiency in alleviating their children’s symptoms. 85% of doctors consider that hairy cumin is efficient, but don’t prescribe it for their patients and don’t use it for their own children. This might be due to doctors’ lack of knowledge about phytotherapy, the fact that there isn’t any posology recommended, or that it’s difficult for doctors to prescribe phytotherapy for fear of tainting their reputation. Conclusion. Hairy cumin is used in Morocco for symptomatic treatment of infantile colic, but only by the patients. Doctors believe it’s efficient; however they don’t use it for their own children and don’t advise their patients to use it. Therapeutic perspectives on infantile colic might be expanded in the future by the development of prospective, double crossed, placebo controlled studies on hairy cumin.
