Troubles liés à l’usage des écrans : une revue de la littérature de l’enfant à l’adulte

Abstract : Introduction. Screens have an important place in our daily living. Screen related disorders appears to be a serious health problem, particularly in occidental society. Materials and methods. We have used scientific search database PubMed, PsycARTICLES and JAMA, using MeSH keywords: screen related disorder, addictive behavior, screen time, videogame, substance-related disorder, teenagers, adults. Results. Screen exposure during childhood could lead young children away from essential learning, normal cognitive development or social skills acquirement. For teenagers, screen exposure is not only a problem of content, but also a problem of quantity. In adulthood, screen related disorders involve the neural pathway of the reward system and share some similarly to substance abuse. Treatments involve psychotherapy and also care about active comorbidities. The general practitioner is the cornerstone of prevention and information about screen exposure. It is more about defining screen use framework and prevention than forbiding and outcasting screens. Safe screen use should be based on healthy management, constructive use, positive example and also screen time and screen related behavior monitoring. Widely spread information, continuing medical education and clear recommendations are needed to improve the management of patient suffering from screen related disorders.
