De l’abandon du chemin de fer au tout-automobile à La Réunion : 1953 -1976

Abstract : The question of transport on Reunion Island is first and foremost an economic need. Being an island with special needs and subject to that logic of which is of import and export, Réunion must equip itself with increasingly efficient means of transport. Thus the railway was born in 1882 but its fate was sealed after the Second World War. The train no longer met the conditions for economic rents and was abandoned in favour of another way of transport, which is the car. However, from the 1960s onwards the car creates a new dynamism in the island and in the daily life of each inhabitant. The all-motor car makes its appearance in the department. It is a new way to get around which implies a new relationship with space and in some cases they lead to accidents and other recklessness on the road. The transition from rail to road is rather a subject of economic, political and social issue. The "Route du littoral" symbolises this entry into a new stage in the history of Reunion Island.
