Revel au XVe siècle à partir de son compoix

Abstract : This master thesis result of deciphering and investigating the tax roll of Revel dating from the second half of the fifteenth century. This progressive study, by translation of the medieval occitan language, the written language in which several scribes wrote this register, made to highlight a fiscal organization of the royal bastide of Revel, as well as to sketch an outline of the economic and social organization of its inhabitants. In the historiographical context of the southern taxation of the late Middle Ages and the new cities of the southwest of France, the subject can be seen as the study of the organization of a royal bastide through the fiscal register named compoix. This compoix is presented as a collection of inventories from Revel. It has been highlighted that the writer of the register records the statements streets after streets. The taxpayer orally declares his identity and then all of his real estate and movable property. This systematic inventory is done in order to allow a property tax to be allocated to the various taxpayers. The study of the possessions makes it possible to draw up a picture of the social and economic society of the bastide of Revel at the time of the making of the register. Revel appears to be a royal bastide founded in 1342 by king Philip VI. Bastide is the name given in the customs’ charters of the new towns in the southwest built between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries according to a regular and orthonormal plan; bastide is designed to facilitate trade, crafts and the economy. The functioning of the city's administrative and financial structures are included in the bastide's charter of customs. The charter sets out political, economic, financial and administrative rules aimed at organizing the lives of the inhabitants. The systematic study of the inventory of property owned by taxpayers shows an economic and social structure of the inhabitants of Revel.
