Morgoth : The Archetype of Evil in The Silmarillion

Abstract : J.R.R. Tolkien, best known for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, is truly a father for the genre of Fantasy, which his works were and are still the major influences of this literary genre. This influence is notably due to the characters Tolkien created and which became true archetypes in Fantasy such as the figure of the hero, the wizard and of course of the one of the Dark Lord. In 1977 is published for the first time and posthumously The Silmarillion, Tolkien’s Life Work. This paragon of the genre of Fantasy and of the one of Myth-Fantasy introduces the Genesis of Middleearth as well as many major characters such as Melkor, introduced in the very first pages of the book: a fallen angel which would later become Morgoth: The Black Foe of the World. This primordial antagonist of Tolkien’s work thus appears as the major figure of the villain in the book : an archetype of Evil. This study as for aim to bring to light the elements that make the character of Morgoth an archetype of Evil in the work of Tolkien and more widely in the genre of Fantasy. This is first through a study of the religious approach of the character, of his many influences and his very philosophical approach to the notion of Evil that we introduce it as indeed an archetype. A second study based on structuralist theories enables us to define Morgoth as an archetype in the genre of Fantasy as well as in the root genre of Fantasy: the one of Faery Tales. This same study leads us to a third one based on the semiotic analysis of the character which enables us to turn our approach towards the discourse analysis of Morgoth and of his acts of language in order to set it as an archetype of Evil.
