Différence de connaissances entre les deux parents sur le dépistage anténatal de trisomie 21 : étude dans deux maternités de l’Isère

Abstract : Objectives: The study of the difference in knowledge of both parents on the antenatal screening for trisomy 21 allows to evaluate, on the one hand the quality of the information transmitted to the couples, and on the other hand the effective father’s place in the pregnancy, in order to improve the practices. Method: A questionnaire assessing the knowledge of both parents on trisomy 21 screening was carried out and distributed in two maternity hospitals in Grenoble and Voiron. A comparison of mothers and fathers’ scores by the Student t-test followed by an analysis of multiple variance highlighted the topics for wich the difference between the two parents is the highest. Results: 81 couples or 162 questionnaires, were studied. The analysis concluded that the mothers had a better overall knowledge of antenatal screening, with an average score significantly higher than that of the fathers (respectively 12.3 and 9.8 out of 19 points, with p < 0.001). Four main themes deepen this difference: the optional nature of screening, the role of ultrasound in the search for trisomy 21, the factors that increase the risk of Down’s syndrom, and the facultative aspect of amniocentesis. Conclusion: There is some lack of overall knowledge by both parents about Down’s syndrome, as well as the options available to parents at high risk for trisomy 21. Society is changing, and the father is increasingly involved in the course of the pregnancy. Health care professionals have a responsibility to inform and include both parents equally in this important stage of pregnancy.
