Éducation Thérapeutique en Gériatrie : comment mieux comprendre nos patients

Abstract : Ageing population is a major public health related issue especially due to an increase in life expectancy since several years. Elderly people, very often known to be multimorbidity patients, also present geriatric syndromes such as frailty, falls and loneliness, thus leading to a loss of independence and a lower quality of life. To develop a self-management educational program fit for multimorbidity patients, interview remains the most efficient way to establish an educational diagnosis. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the contribution of the OMAGE set of cards at this particular level with regard to understanding the needs of patients compared to the traditional interview undertaken. One of the strengths of the game of cards is targeting the patient's priority to be able to activate one or more levers compared to the traditional interview. Results showed that with the game of cards, mobility problems (33% of patients) and sleep disorders (10%) were among the major issues of the patients. Moreover, it was found that patients were more likely to reveal their drug-related problems (33%) and loneliness (38%) through the set of cards rather than the traditional interview where those were only 2% and 10% respectively. The set of cards helped to know the patients better through the different themes studied. In order to attain a good therapeutic adherence, it is important that the patient is listened to. The survey conducted after the game of cards showed patients’ interest for this new interacting tool. In spite of the numerous advantages shown by the study, the set of cards cannot be considered as the only method for educational diagnosis. Instead, it should be used as a complementary tool to the traditional interview.
