Le don d'organes en médecine générale : rôle potentiel du médecin généraliste face à l'opposition au don

Abstract : Background and purpose. Organ transplantation is a major public health issue and is made possible by the preliminary stage of organ donation. The current rate of opposition to organ donation averages 30%. Reducing opposition to organ donation appears to be an interesting and relevant approach to increase organ transplantation rate. The aim of this study is to assess whether the general practitioner can help to reduce the rate of opposition to organ donation. Materials and methods. We questioned the general practitioners of Normandy via the register of regional union of liberal doctors and, in parallel, the hospital coordination of organ and tissue removal from North-East regulatory and support service on the potential role of the general practitioners in organ donation coordinations. Results. 78.5% of the responding Norman general practitioners (GP) believe that they can play a role in the coordination during interviews with patients’ relatives to help them follow the wishes of their deceased. Inaddition, 89.6% of GPs are ready to respond to a request. The coordinations are more divided on this role, 51.0% of them being in favor, including 58.3% of the Norman teams. GPs are most helpful when the patient’s position regarding organ donation is unknown. Raising awareness of organ donation in the general population also remains an essential factor to promote organ transplantation. Conclusion. Developing the role of the general practitioner, together with those of hospital coordinations, and raising awareness of organ donation in the general population appear to be two valuable ways to initiate and promote discussion and donation process.
