Apport de l'expérience patient et des sciences sociales dans l'évaluation de l'hygiène des mains des professionnels de santé : une approche prometteuse ?

Abstract : Currently, there is a lack of robust tools to assess hygiene practices of healthcare professionals. This thesis will present the "Pulpe'Friction" audits, allowing to perform quick audits of hand hygiene practices of healthcare professionals. Based on the exchange and partnership between an investigator and each professional, they allow the investigator to collect self-reported practices, integrate patient's experiment and use social sciences to identify the behavioral brakes to good hand hygiene practices. The main objective of this work is to assess whether there is an association between self-reported compliance by healthcare professionals and patient compliance in a given healthcare setting. The secondary objectives are to describe the results of these audits and to identify factors associated with self-reported hand hygiene compliance by health care professionals, including specialty and profession. The results show that there is a clear association between self-reported practices of caregivers and patient perceptions. These initial results are guiding national actions to provide information and organise training for the general public on how to achieve hand hygiene. Raising awareness among healthcare professionals about the importance of hand hygiene is also essential: whether at the level of the department through designated referents, at the facility level through hygiene referents, or at the regional level through dedicated conferences and training sessions organised by Centers for the Prevention of Healthcare-Associated Infections.
