Les maisons d’édition spécialisées dans les littératures de l’imaginaire

Abstract : Imaginary literature (science-fiction, fantasy, fantastic) —and, generally, genre literature (crime fiction, romance novels, gore literature, etc.)— is badly considered. This kind of literature is not much represented in bookstore and press, it is indeed a niche industry. This memorandum examines the case of publishing houses specialized in imaginary literature: in a context where they have bad press and the majority of sales are made by the major general-interest houses, how does specialized houses —mostly small structures— manage to survive? What are their strategies? To settle this question, this study —based primarily on interviews with industry publishers— presents an overview of the sector and its specific characteristics, describes the way these publishers are functioning and develops a critical aspect for their survival: the means used to promote and sell.
