Évaluation des connaissances des parents concernant l’impact des écrans sur les enfants et les comportements à adopter pour limiter cet impact en Isère et en Savoie

Abstract : The use of screens by children is often inappropriate with harmful effects in the short and long term. However, despite numerous means of dissemination, recommendations on the subject do not seem to be implemented at home. Is the information given to parents heard, retained and understood? The objective of our study was to describe the state of knowledge of parents concerning the impact of screens on children and the behaviors to adopt to limit this impact. An observational, multicenter, cross-sectional, quantitative, questionnaire-based study was conducted from 21/10/2020 to 29/01/2021 in Isère and Savoie. This questionnaire included 20 closed and independent questions, 12 of which were theoretical about the harmful effects of screens and what was recommended to do. 500 questionnaires intended for parents of children under 12 years of age were distributed to 26 PMI doctors, general practitioners or pediatricians. 308 parents responded. The rate of correct answers was generally very good: for 5 out of 12 questions, this rate was higher than 85%. For 6 out of 12 questions, it was between 62 and 79%, and for the last question, it was 36.5%. Questions about what is recommended to do to limit the impact of screens had a higher overall rate of correct answers than questions about the impacts themselves. Parental degree level significantly influenced the rate of correct responses to each question in favor of high degree levels with p ≤ 0.01. Parents seem to have a good knowledge of the impacts of screens on children and especially of the behaviors to adopt to limit this impact. In order to perfect this prevention, the negative impacts should be emphasized and prevention should be reinforced among parents with a low level of education. The inappropriate use of screens by children does not seem to be due to a lack of knowledge on the part of parents about what is appropriate to do. It would be interesting to conduct a behavioral study to understand why parents fail to implement these recommendations at home.
