Correction des images VENμS (CNES) par la méthode Cosine pour le suivi de l'enneigement et de la couverture nuageuse : application dans la vallée du Khumbu (Everest, Népal)

Abstract : Since a few years, global warming becomes a worldwide concern, impacting every country. The Himalayan mountains aren’t spared by its consequences. This work follows the IGE (Grenoble, France) research process, studying the Khumbu valley and the surroundings. Optical images has been registered from November 27, 2017 to nowadays, by the VENμS satellite. It has a heliosynchronous orbit and is set on a partnership between the CNES (France) et the ASI (Israël). This project materializes with three output product types: (i) near infrared images corrected from the topographic effects with the Cosine correction (“TopCos”), (ii) improved cloud masks (“CloudCov”), and (iii) snow cover area maps (“SCA”). These three elements has been compared to in-situ measurements from three weather stations, in order to study: the corrected reflectance images (“TopCos”) quality and their likelihood with the in-situ albedo; the contribution of a high-resolution DEM (8 m), compared to a 90 m DEM for the topographic illumination correction; the cloud behavior according to seasons; and the cloud cover evolution over the area.
