Touristification, surtourisme et réduction de la pauvreté

Abstract : There are two ways to reduce poverty through tourism. The first is to stimulate economic growth through tourism development and allow the poorest to benefit from it. The second is to support the poorest so that they can better participate in this sector to benefit from it. In Sapa (Vietnam), the growth mentality dominates tourism development strategies. Touristification in accordance with this vision causes overtourism and the loss of attractiveness and revenue of the destination in high yield markets. At the same time, the local population, the majority of whom live in poverty, were not well prepared to deal with the impacts of touristification and overtourism. As a result, the poverty rate remains extremely high, although tourism is growing strongly.
