Évaluation des bénéfices des postures de yoga sur la qualité de vie des patients atteints de chikungunya chronique : une étude pilote contrôlée et randomisée

Abstract : Introduction: In 95% of cases, chronic chikungunya manifests itself as chronic pain despite treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and physiotherapy sessions. The benefits of yoga postures on various arthralgia and quality of life have already been proven but have never been studied in patients suffering from chronic chikungunya. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the benefits of yoga postures in this population. Materials: This was a monocentric, prospective, controlled and randomized wait-list study with an intervention group receiving weekly yoga sessions for 8 weeks and a control group. The primary outcome was the physical and mental components of the SF-36 scale assessing quality of life. Secondary outcomes were the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the 4-item neuropathic pain scale (DN4) and range of joint motion by goniometry. These scores were assessed at baseline, at week 8, at week 18, and compared between the 2 groups. Results: Thirty-three patients were randomized and thirty patients were analyzed. The study was stopped after 13 weeks due to COVID-19 crisis. After 8 weeks of study, yoga did not improve the physical and mental scores of the SF36 scale compared to the control group. No improvement was observed in VAS and DN4. Conclusion: Although this is a small pilot study, yoga postures do not appear to improve the quality of life of patients with chronic chikungunya.
