Exposition professionnelle aux particules ultrafines et lésions histopathologiques placentaires : étude rétrospective à partir de 130 cas

Abstract : Background: ultrafine particles (UFP) are nanoscaled particles produced unintentionally during human activities. They have a higher biological reactivity than bigger particles and can reach the placenta after maternal exposition. A study showed an association between the maternal occupational exposure to UFP and fetal growth retardation. Yet few studies have focused on the effect of UFP exposure on placental histopathological lesions. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between the maternal occupational exposure to UFP and histopathological lesions of their placenta. Material and method: the analyses were based on data from the ARTEMIS Center. A job-exposure matrix was used to assess the occupational exposure to UFP. The histopathological placental exam was performed by two pathologists blinded to the exposure and followed the recommendations of the Amsterdam Consensus. results: The study sample included 130 placentas (30 exposed, 130 unexposed). Occupational exposure to UFP is significantly associated with placental hypoplasia (concerning 61% of the exposed patients and 34% of the unexposed ones, p<0,01). Conclusion: maternal occupational exposure during pregnancy to UFP is significantly associated with placental hypoplasia. Further research is needed to explain its pathophysiological mechanisms.
