Étude de la qualité de vie des parents d’enfant(s) mineur(s) en situation de handicap et place du médecin généraliste dans la prise en charge

Abstract : Introduction. A child's disability impacts the entire life of its parents, the main family caregivers. In 2020, the French government initiated a support strategy for family caregivers. Thus, their well-being appears to be as important as their child's well-being. Objective. The main objective of this work was to study the quality of life of parents of minor children with disabilities in several dimensions of their daily life: life time organization, relationships within (couple, siblings, close family) and outside (friends, hobbies) the family, health, professional activity, social health-care information access, economic burden and feelings about the health professionals who follow their child. The secondary objective was to analyze the role of their general practitioner. Material and method. This was a crosssectional descriptive observational epidemiological study carried out from June to November 2020. A quality of life questionnaire has been drawn up and sent out throughout France. Results. Childhood disability mainly seems to impact the lives of mothers. Their main needs are more intangible than material: support (psychological, administrative) and time (time-off). Family caregivers criticize a lack of coordination between health professionals, information and training of general practitioners. Conclusion. Health care providers and social workers may improve the quality of life of family caregivers with adequate training and support structures.
