Effet d’un programme d’activités physiques adaptées sur l’évolution de l’estime de soi physique et la perception de la qualité de vie de patients en situation d’obésité

Abstract : Background. Obesity is a complex chronic pathology that affects almost the entire planet and is constantly increasing. This disease currently represents a major public health issue. In France, 17% of adults are obese and the prevalence of morbid obesity (BMI ≥ 40kg/m²) has doubled in 10 years (from 2006 to 2016), corresponding to more than 500 000 adults today (Leers, 2020). Therefore, the care of this population is crucial in view of the multiple consequences that the disease has on these people. This dissertation focuses on the psychological consequences of obesity and more particularly on the overall and physical self-esteem, as well as on quality of life. It reviews studies on the positive effects of physical activity on the psychological disorders caused by obesity and studies on the deterioration of quality of life and low self-esteem in obese individuals. Objectives. The objective of the study is to evaluate the effect of adapted physical activity on the evolution of physical self-esteem and the perception of quality of life of obese adults and thus, to bring an additional study to literature, still little developed around this subject. Secondly, the challenge is to examine the possible comparison between an APA program carried out independently and one delivered by health professionals within a sport-health structure. Methods. Questionnaires measuring physical self-esteem, quality of life and level of physical activity were collected for 21 obese patients (16 did the APA program independently and 5 did the supervised program) before starting APA schedule as well as at the end of the program. Results. The results support our theory that adapted physical activity improves levels of physical self-esteem and perceived quality of life in patients with obesity. The study also showed a greater increase in both variables for patients who performed a supervised APA program than for patients who completed independent APA. Conclusion. This study has shown the importance of the implementation of APA in the management of obesity. The comparison between the types of programs (supervised/autonomous) constitutes an interesting aspect to be studied in order to optimize the management of physical activity and to orient the patient towards a practice that guarantees psychological well-being.
