Tommies et Normands : les relations entre les militaires britanniques du 21 Army Group et la population du Calvados de juin 1944 à la fin 1945

Abstract : This thesis deals with the relations maintained by the British soldiers on the soil of Calvados with the local population from June 6, 1944 until the end of 1945. First of all, the arrival and the installation of these soldiers on the territory are evoked, by returning beforehand on the period of the Occupation. During this one develops, among the population, an Anglophile feeling which explains the reception reserved by the civilians to their English liberators during the summer of 1944. Then the organization and the management of the relations by the British army are approached. Various units are analyzed as well as their role in Normandy: Civil Affairs, Military Police, and Claims and Hirings. Finally, the multiplicity of relations in the department and their long-term sustainability are evoked through three themes: the employment of civilians by the English Army, relations between Tommies and the French, then, friendly relations. The aim of this work is to study the relations between the British soldiers and the Calvadosiens, from their origins until the beginning of a memorial construction. Starting, in particular, from the funds of the departmental archives of Calvados and the National Archives of London, we were able to observe and analyze the complexity and the diversity of the relations which are maintained, between civilians and soldiers, in the department, from the summer 1944.
