Le rétrocontrôle proprioceptif : une compétence indispensable aux orthophonistes rééduquant la voix

Abstract : Proprioceptive feedback is an essential skill for speech-language pathologists rehabilitating the voice. While this skill has been studied in singers and actors, it has not been studied in speech-language pathologists. We conducted a randomized study with 36 speech-language pathology students in the Paris center, divided into 2 groups.
The experimental group performed a sequence of proprioceptive awakening movements and the control group listened to a relaxation session, both lasting about 30 minutes. The quality of their voice and the proprioceptive sensations associated with the vocal gesture were analyzed before and after the protocol and also according to the participants' activities.
Voice quality and proprioceptive sensations associated with the vocal gesture were similar in both groups before any protocol-related intervention.
After the proprioceptive awakening sequence, the students perceived more sensations related to the vocal gesture than after the relaxation. Perceptual assessment by a panel of judges indicated that only the proprioceptive awareness sequence improved the voice.
Practitioners of mindfulness activities such as yoga, meditation or relaxation experienced more proprioceptive sensations associated with the vocal gesture. The perceptual assessment indicated that students with music, mindfulness, dance, or theater practices had better voice quality. Students who sing or act have better acoustic and aerodynamic parameters of the voice.
An awareness of techniques that promote access to proprioceptive sensations would be beneficial to speech-language pathology students considering conducting voice rehabilitation.
