Étude ergonomique des activités des agents d’exploitation des routes du conseil départemental du Finistère

Abstract : Major occupational health problem, musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) have harmful consequences for the workers’ health and the structure’s performance. A scientific discipline can help tackle this : ergonomics. By identifying the risk factors in work situations, the ergonomist can establish recommendations aimed at improving the health/performance couple. In the literature, very few ergonomics studies have been focused on highway maintenance workers. However, several activities made the profession is very exposed to MSD problems. The objective of this thesis was therefore to see how a multidimensional analysis of the highway maintenance workers activities can lead to transforming recommendations of work situations, with the objective of preserving health and quality of provided services. In the case of manual brush clearing study, open observations led to hypotheses about the work situation. To verify the hypotheses, a systematic observation plan was established. Thus, from a heart rate measurement and a video recording over a full working day, we were able to highlight : a rather heavy physical workload, an acceptable vibration exposure and strong postural constraints. In addition, observations and discussions with the workers highlighted : a risk of falling associated with no safety harness use for various reasons ; managerial problems in some structures. The objective of the thesis was achieved since, following this analysis, improving recommendations for the work situation could be formulated. They concern technical, human and organizational aspects and their implementation should preserve the worker’s health and services quality.
