La mise en application de la performance énergétique des stations d'épuration en boues activées

Abstract : Beside suitable treatment performance for ensuring protection of the natural receiving environment, activated sludge wastewater treatment plants have, from now on, to reduce their non-renewable energy consumption and to use or even to produce renewable energy for the needs of the treatment. Hence, implementing their energy performance leads to reconsider their design. The biological reactor must be relevantly designed and cogeneration on biogas produced by anaerobic digestion as well as solar drying of sewage sludge may be promoted. The results of the process simulation of an existing low-design capacity wastewater treatment plant show that implementing anaerobic digestion only is not sufficient to achieve regulation requirements. Anaeroboc co-digestion fed with external high-potential methane substrates is necessary and can allow, by itself, to achieve those requirements. However, such solution implies additional regulation requirements and operational restrictions which should be fully considered by the employers. Furthermore, solar drying of sewage sludge can allow, by itself, to attain the binding target for energy from renewable sources. Last but not least, the current operating conditions and energy performance of the scrutinised wastewater treatment plant underline the important matter of reducing clear water in the influent. Capital expenditures for implementing energy performance would amount to approximately half of those of the wastewater treatment plant itself. Moroever, the expected income from the sale of electricity produced by cogeneration would not cover the expenditure for purchasing electricity from the public networks. As a solution to the raised issues, nitrogen removal by using anamnox bacteria and two-phase co-digestion with pre-treated co-substrates might be implemented on a wider scale over the coming years.
