Motifs de recours à la phytothérapie des médecins généralistes de l’Isère

Abstract : Situation: Phytotherapy has been used for centuries and is based on plants. It has been excluded when chemistry and pharmaceutical industry became important. This way, treatments can be standardised. However phytotherapy is more en more used since few years. There are some risks without medical supervision and follow-up. GP do not study phytotherapy and their practices are not often explored. Goal : to assess the reasons of using phytotherapy for general practitioners. Methodology: descriptive review with a survey sent to general practitioners in Isère by mail. Results: whereas only 10% of GP are trained in phytotherapy, 65% report prescribtion it at least once per month. It is often an option for psychosomatic symptoms like neuro-psychiatric, cardiovascular or digestive diseases. Moreover it is used to avoid a risk of addiction or to become chronic. An other reason of this prescription is to meet patients expectations, mainly for prevention and risk of infection. Conclusion: phytotherapy has an important place in the therapeutic arsenal. Even if they are old habits, this project demonstrated that phytotherapy can help the treatment when conventional medicine can not find a solution.
