Analyse des performances des athlètes ayant participé aux Jeux Paralympiques et Championnats du monde en fonction de l’origine du handicap : inné versus acquis

Abstract : The optimization of high-level sport performance for people with disabilities is ruled by a complex and questionable classification system. This system does not consider the origin of the disability (congenital or acquired during life). The aim of this study is therefore to investigate the performance of athletes according to the congenital or acquired nature of their disability in swimming and athletics. The origin of the disability was collected from the athletes’ biographical data. The performances are divided into two datasets : a result dataset on the competitions considered and a "ranking" dataset listing the athletes’ best annual performances. A raw data analysis was carried out on this first dataset and a longitudinal analysis by maximum performance trajectories and non-linear mixed model was carried out on the ranking dataset. The age/performance relationship was modelled by the Moore and IMAP functions. The results show very close samples with performances that are higher in swimming for the acquired group and conversely in athletics. The ages at peak performance are earlier for the congenital group in men and women. These results provide new insights on the issue of the origin of disability in relation to performance and could have important implications for the classification system. Furthermore, the impact on the performance trajectories of athletes could guide choices of coaches and sports federations.
