Déterminants du choix des femmes enceintes concernant le professionnel auquel elles confient leur suivi de grossesse

Abstract : Background : Midwives, general practitioners and gynecologists are qualified to practice prenatal follow-up but the reason why couples choose their health professional is not clear. The aim of the study is to identify the determining factors of this choice. The secondary objectives are to describe women’s knowledge about these different practitioners and to specify treating physician’s place in pregnancy monitoring. Method : A quantitative, descriptive, crosssectional study was conducted from october 2020 to january 2021 on Reunion Island. Pregnant women where asked to fill out a questionnaire during their first trimester ultrasound. Among a list of criteria, women had to check those which were determining factors in the choice of their health worker. Results : 323 questionnaires were analyzed. Medical and interpersonal skills, ultrasound practice and usual medical or gynecological follow-up pratice were key factors for most women. Our results show a deep ignorance of patients towards their practitioners. Treating physicians undergo frequent questionings about their skills in this field. Conclusion : Pregnant women choose their practitioner according to similar reasons but this choice is nor free nor informed. Counseling about pregnancy monitoring remains poor and inequitable. Giving full and comprehensive information to patients about prenatal follow-up is a professional duty that must be improved.
